Winter Whites!

28th November 2012

White wines can be deliciously heart-warming too at this time of year!

Now that the dark days of winter have truly set in it's time to find comfort in the wholesome soups and brightly coloured spicy dishes that take the edge of the wind chill factor!

This month our friends at www.eatseasonably.co.uk recommend using potatoes in home cooking along with red, white & savoy cabbage, leeks and kale which are all in season this month.

Thankfully wine is always in season! But at T. Wright Wine we know choosing the right wine style to pair with your dish can make all the difference.

This wonderfully warming leek and potato soup recipe is easy to make and healthy too. The best wines to pair with this dish are light but complex whites which can lift the simple flavours of the soup but not overpower them. Bordeaux wines are predominantly recognised as being red, however the whites of Bordeaux should also not be missed! Chateau Haut Rian Bordeaux Blanc is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes which combine to produce a beautifully fresh fruity wine with a subtle depth of flavour which will really amplify the flavours of this soup.

Another fantastic match from France is produced by the highly respected Alain Cailbourdin, his Pouilly Fume Cuvee de Boisfleury from the Loire region, shows Sauvignon Blanc in yet another guise; Delicate floral notes, grapefruit and a hint of smoke combine with racy lime and citrus notes underscored by wonderful steely tones, a truly sophisticated and elegant Pouilly Fume.

Stepping over to Italy other equally great choices include our Matteo Braidot Pinot Grigio. This Pinot Grigio is a cut above many of the near translucent varieties we see on the market today, it possesses far more in terms of body, flavour & weight on the palate. This richer texture combined with an amazing minerality make it a wonderful food wine for a huge variety of vegetable, white meat and fish dishes. Or how about trying the ever more fashionable Gavi di Gavi, known as Italy's answer to Chablis? The Roberto Sarotto Bric Sassi Gavi di Gavi is a delicious white wine produced in the Piedmont region of Italy from the Cortese grape. Notes of elderflower, pear and citrus fruits mingle with wet stone and delicate herbal notes, refreshingly dry yet smooth and flavourful. If you haven't tried Gavi di Gavi yet then we heartily recommend you give it a go!
