A polyphenol called Resveratrol, found in the skin of red grapes and also in peanuts and berries, has been identified as a key compound within this process. Although Resveratrol is also present in white & rose wines it is at much lower levels, the highest levels of Resveratrol have been found in cool climate red wines. However it should be noted that drinking too much wine will have a negative effect on health regardless of antioxidants & polyphenols!

Putting the scientific jargon to one side this equates to a maximum of one small glass of wine a day for women and one to two small glasses of wine a day for men, preferably red wine & with food to make the most of the health benefits of wine. As there are six standard glasses in each bottle of wine it makes sense to share a bottle with friends & family and it is also the sociable element in giving a bottle of wine that explains another reason for the increase in the popularity of wine gifts.
