Chateau Cos d`Estournel

2nd Growth
Louis Gaspard d`Estournel, known as the Maharajah of Saint Estephe, was the founder of Chateau Cos d`Estournel. Having inherited some vines near the village of Cos he quickly recognised the quality of certain amongst them and decided in 1811 to vinify them separately, thus the wines of Chateau Cos d`Estournel were born.

The word "Cos" means hill of pebbles in old Gascon language and it is true that the vineyards of Cos d`Estournel lie on exceptionally deep layers of gravel, forcing the vines to extend further down into the earth while helps concentrate the grape flavours. The vineyards are further aided by a unique microclimate that prevents extreme fluctuations of temperature.

The wines of Cos d`Estournel have become known for a style that is masculine yet elegant & powerful yet smooth. The 1995 vintage is one of true refinement, following an extremely dry summer the grapes developed beautifully concentrated flavours. Aromas of juicy blackcurrants, cigar box, eucalyptus and licori

ce blend with a harmonious and smooth palate of layered cassis, spice, damson and plum flavours. The fine grained tannins provide a firm but supple framework while the finish is supremely elegant and long. Anticipated maturity from 2005 to 2020 minimum.
60% Cabernet Sauvignon
40% Merlot
A wine of great class to be paired with fine traditional red meat dishes such as steak in a pepper or mushroom sauce, roast beef with caramelised vegetables, roast lamb with a herb crust, cheese and herb stuffed mushrooms.
